Assistant Controller - Property Accounting (Regular-Full Time)

We are looking for an Assistant Controller - Property Accounting to consolidate the reporting of financial information for operational related activities of Sun Communities and its affiliates.


OVERVIEW


As an Assistant Controller you'll provide leadership and direction in the areas of generally accepted accounting principles, accounts payable, management reporting, bank reconciliations, property-level accounting budgeting, and variance comment reviews. You'll initiate new control systems and management reporting to ensure accuracy, efficiency and timely preparation of monthly financial statements. Additionally, you'll assist in the training on accounting policies and procedures for Accounting team members while assisting in the accounting integration and onboarding of acquired properties.


JOB DUTIES



  1. Assist with the coordination and preparation of workpapers for the annual audit and quarterly reviews; prepare or delegate workpapers to Accountants, review and revise workpapers assisgned, and respond to inquiries from external auditors.

  2. Ensure accuracy and timely preparation of monthly financial statements including review of workpapers and account reconciliations, journal entries, and significant accounting transactions.

  3. Ensure accurate and timely processing of accounts payable, petty cash, expense reports, accounts receivable, cash controls and utility invoices.

  4. Act as a subject matter expert for accounts payable and revenue recognition; implement improvements to accounts pabale and revenue recognition/accounts receivable processes such as vendor master lists, escheatment, procure to pay and record to cash.

  5. Respond to issues and questions related to financial statements; investigate, resolve and coordinate accounting-related matters and initiate procedures to accommodate growth and new business.

  6. Assist with integration and onboarding of acquired properties to ensure required accounting information flows from source documents to the GL.

  7. Coordinate team member selection, training, scheduling and development of direct reports, and ensure all team members comply with appropriate policies and procedures.

  8. Assist with creating overall department goals and prioritizing work for team members on accounting-related matters.

  9. Champion technology initiatives within the department to identify processes and procedures for improvement; identify and implement processes to increase efficiency.

  10. Provide direction on maintenance of accounting software, general ledger and accounts payable modules.

  11. Collaborate with VP, Technical Accounting & Reporting to coordinate activities related to new acquisitions and Accounting department changes in policies and procedures; maintain communication and provide training to Operations through meeting and email correpsondence to ensure the needs of both departments are addressed and procedures are consistently followed.

  12. Maintain accounting software as new accounts are added and old accounts are purged to ensure the general ledger is balanced; maintain consolidation tables, ensure control totals are tested regularly and intercompany transactions are eliminated properly.

  13. Establish and maintain systems and controls that confirm integrity of all systems, processes and data; update SOX narratives and key controls, and monitor compliance relative to department processes.

  14. Provide Corporate Controller and CFO with accurate and timely reports to assist with facilitating financial requirements.

  15. Coordinate monthly team meetings, establish mutual goals, distribute responsibilities, and monitor status of projects assigned.

  16. Provide direction on maintenance of accounting software, general ledger and accounts payable modules by inserting and/or deleting accounts, communities, bank books and consolidation tables to ensure financial statements are complete and in balance.

  17. Other duties as assigned.


REQUIREMENTS



  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related field

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

  • Minimum 10 years management experience in a multi-entity accounting department

  • Prior experience in the real estate industry, a plus

  • Experience with Yardi (EDI) and Blackline software systems, preferred

  • Extensive knowledge of GAAP

  • Demonstrated leadership abilities

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to organize, manage multiple priorities and meet competing deadlines

  • Advanced computer proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Accounting software programs


Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
